Webahead Internet is a leading specialist in web design and marketing, delivering services to companies throughout the UK.
We sat down with Craig Miln, Assistant Design Manager at Webahead Internet, to discuss his experience with hiring apprentices and the impact they’ve had on the business.
He said: “I’ve worked for Webahead Internet for six years, and in that time, we’ve hired one to two apprentices every year. We’ve always been proud to offer a place to those who finish their apprenticeship – many of whom are still currently working at the business!
“We try to get apprentices as involved as possible in the wider workings of the business and choose roles that will give them the widest range of skills possible during their training. This could be anything from managing our social media schedule to making direct changes to code on client websites.
“Our current apprentice is absolutely wonderful. She has a really positive personality and always sees the bright side of things. She’s taken an active role in reviving our social media presence across a number of platforms and has been getting people involved who would have otherwise shied away from the camera – it’s been a great move for staff morale!”
Not only do the apprentices at Webahead Internet get to experience a range of responsibilities during their apprenticeship, but Craig also told us how the apprentices have impacted the business. He said: “Each apprentice has had a hugely positive impact on the business! Their positive energy and approach to trying new things has helped the wider team branch out of their comfort zones and appreciate a wider scope of views and opinions.
“Some of our staff who started on an apprenticeship are now some of the most proficient designers we have due to their hard work and dedication to helping the business succeed.”
Taking on new apprentices each year has become a vital part of Webahead Internet’s recruitment strategy, and Craig would recommend that any business adopt a similar approach. He said: “I personally think that apprenticeships are the best route to hire new staff. From a financial perspective, the subsidised salary is a benefit, but an even bigger benefit is the framework and support offered by training providers. Some of the best interviews I’ve ever undertaken as a manager have been with apprenticeship applicants. It’s a fantastic way to get people into work.
“I would highly recommend Middlesbrough College Group to any employers thinking about taking on an apprentice. They’ve found us some extremely capable workers and even helped us when another provider was unable to continue offering the learners the best quality training.”
Are you facing a growing skills gap, or perhaps you’re looking for a new recruitment strategy to boost your business? Hiring an apprentice is a cost-effective way to hire new talent, futureproof your workforce, and make sure your business has the skills it needs to thrive.
