Corporate Social Responsibility

Northern Skills is committed to supporting the economic, social and cultural success of the North East and Yorkshire communities in which we serve.

Back of football player

We feel that as the leading provider of apprenticeships and training within the North-East, we have a responsibility to help shape the skills agenda of the 21st century and take a pro-active approach in aligning our training to the needs of the local economy.

We also believe that we have a duty of care to the world in which our business operates, ranging from the health and wellbeing of our employees, to our carbon emissions.

Key elements of our corporate social responsibility include:

Apprentice and staff at Apprenticeship awards
Working with young people

We take a pro-active approach in supporting schools with their STEM curriculum to encourage more young people to pursue careers and apprenticeships which reflect the demands of the North East and Yorkshire economy. We also organise events targeted at young females to help gender balance our industries.

Supporting the community

We work with local councils to have an active presence at community events and have previously sponsored the Middlesbrough Pride and Middlesbrough MELA. We have also hosted two very successful Imagineer Festivals at Middlesbrough College with the aim of engaging the local community in STEM based activities.

Staff wellbeing

We have invested heavily in the wellbeing of our staff, and as such, haven been awarded Investors in People Gold Standard, a reflection of our commitment to retaining and developing quality employees.

Environmental protection

We comply with all relevant environment legislation and seek to improve our resource consumption efficiently. For instance, we use a range of renewable energy sources on campus, which are integrated into the design of our buildings, and use FSE accredited materials to offset our carbon balance.

Encouraging business growth and entrepreneurship

We sponsor a range of regional awards throughout the year, which help to encourage and celebrate new business success. We also host an annual awards ceremony at Middlesbrough College recognising the success of our apprentices within the North East and Yorkshire.

A commitment to working in partnership with business

We believe that it is critical to our businesses success to work with employers to align our training to the needs of the local economy. For this reason, we work with a number of advisory boards who support and advise us with curriculum and apprenticeship trailblazers.
