Software Developer Apprenticeship – Level 4

Knowledge
Apprentices will develop a strong understanding of:

• Software development methodologies including Agile, Waterfall, and DevOps.
• The software development lifecycle and secure coding practices.
• Programming principles and the use of modern languages such as Python, JavaScript, C#, or Java.
• Database design, APIs, and version control systems.
• Cloud platforms, deployment tools, and CI/CD pipelines.

Skills

• Apprentices will be able to:
• Design, develop, and test software applications that meet user and business requirements.
• Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code using appropriate programming languages.
• Debug and troubleshoot software issues effectively.
• Use tools such as Git, VirtualBox, and project management platforms to collaborate and manage development tasks.
• Deploy applications to cloud environments and integrate with APIs and databases.

Applicants are expected to hold GCSEs in English and Maths at grade C or above (Grade 4–9), along with either a Level 3 qualification or relevant industry experience that demonstrates their potential to succeed in the apprenticeship.

End-Point Assessment Overview for ST0116 Software Developer Apprenticeship
Before entering the End-Point Assessment (EPA) phase, the employer must confirm that the apprentice is consistently performing at or above the level defined in the occupational standard. This decision may be informed by the training provider, but the final judgement rests solely with the employer.

Also, before entering End-Point (EPA) phase, the employer must ensure, together with the training provider, that the minimum Off-the-Job (OTJ) have been completed.

To progress to EPA, the apprentice must submit:

• A portfolio of evidence showcasing practical work and mapped to the required knowledge, skills, and behaviours (KSBs). This portfolio underpins the professional discussion and should include examples such as project documentation, code samples, feedback, and other relevant artefacts. It is not directly assessed but is reviewed by the independent assessor.
• A summary of a work-based project, including a stakeholder specification. This summary is submitted at the gateway and must demonstrate sufficient scope to meet the EPA requirements. The project itself is compiled post-gateway and must be completed and submitted within the defined timeframe.
