After working for the Staying Put Agency for four years, Nicola Dobson’s passion and dedication has secured her her dream management role within the company.
A part of Middlesbrough Council, the Staying Put Agency is focused around home improvement, working with social care and other organisations to help those who are older, vulnerable or disabled.
Due to her caring nature, when the ILM Management Level 3 Diploma was offered through the Council, Nicola’s manager encouraged her to apply. The 18-month course helped her to develop her existing knowledge and skills, making her the perfect candidate for the Support & Development Officer (Assistive Technology) role advertised within the company.
Balancing full-time work and her two children alongside the diploma proved to be a testing time for Nicola, however not only did she manage to complete it ahead of time, in an impressive 16 months, she was also successful when interviewed for the support vacancy.
The ILM course covers the likes of the theory side of business, equality, diversity & inclusion, and employee rights & responsibilities, with the option for learners to also tailor their modules to suit their career aspirations. In Nicola’s case, this included preparing for presentations and managing performance of both herself and others, with her noting how, “it gives you the freedom depending on the role you’re aiming for.”
Her hard work throughout her studies didn’t go unnoticed, with her assessor, Angela Wright praising the ‘excellent student’ due to her commitment, saying how thrilled she was when finding out about Nicola’s promotion.
Not only has Nicola moved up the career ladder from her previous role as Telecare & Support Services Liaison Officer, her success has already proved to be a huge motivation amongst her team, with many of her colleagues enrolling onto the ILM course to upskill, themselves.
As a testament to the success of Nicola’s hardworking team, they were recently awarded the Home Improvement Agency Award at the #HIAwards18, located at no other than the House of Lords!
