Follow our list of useful, simple and actionable tips to help you become an inspiring and effective team leader!
1) Be a good communicator
An effective team leader communicates clearly. Quality verbal and written communication skills are crucial. A team leader must be able to translate their ideas, goals and expectations through all forms of communication. Make it your goal to master clear communication across all mediums including one-on-one, departmental, and full-staff conversations as well as communication via the phone, over email, and within formal reports.
2) Inspire and motivate
A good team leader needs to inspire their workers to go the extra mile. Build employee self-esteem through recognition and rewards, or by giving employees new responsibilities. Take the time to understand what motivates your team members as this will help you to encourage productivity and passion.
3) Keep a positive attitude
An unhappy team won't function. You must set the positive spirit and make the goals clear. A positive attitude can go a long way in an office. If your team are happy at work they will be more likely to want to be at work
4) Be confident
Confidence inspires trust in your team. As a leader you need confidence in order to make important decisions and to stick to them.
5) Earn the respect of your team
An excellent team leader is respectful and empowers other team members by encouraging them to offer new ideas. Your team should feel comfortable in approaching you with ideas, questions or concerns.
6) Listen to your team
A good team leader listens to others and takes suggestions on board. As a team leader communication should be open, honest, and respectful. Your team should feel free to express their thoughts, opinions, and potential solutions to problems.
7) Enjoy being a leader and be happy!
This may seem obvious but your attitude sets the example for the whole team. If you are happy and positive it can make your whole team work harder and better together.
8) Never stop improving

10) Always be organised
Being a team leader means that you are responsible for both the successes and failures of your team. Team leaders not only have to manage their own time, they also have to manage the whole team’s time and efforts. Be confident in organising and delegating work fairly and effectively so you can ensure your team meet any set objectives and deadlines.
