Employer & Training Testimonials
Labman employee is reaping the benefits of gaining a recognised qualification while staying in work.
Now a Production Manager at Labman Automation, Paul Wheatley began at Middlesbrough College studying for his Level 3 in Electrical Engineering in 2009 where he found his passion for LV electrical work.
Recognising Paul’s great work ethic, Labman knew it was time to invest in his development and help him progress on to higher roles within the company. Paul said:
“Labman recognise the work you put in rather than what qualifications you start off with but as I progressed in the organisation, there were higher level qualifications I needed in order to be given higher levels of responsibility.”
“I completed my apprenticeship in Electrical and Electronic Engineering 3 years ago and thought it was a great experience, my Assessor Chris Barnes supported me throughout my studies and was a genuinely nice guy. The apprenticeship allowed me to get out on site which is a key part of my role.”
Labman pride themselves on their creative environment where friendly, enthusiastic engineers produce world leading custom laboratory automation and products. The company is fast expanding with plans for an additional site at their Stokesley base, tripling in size over the last five years.
“I would highly recommend considering an apprenticeship, if you find a job you love and want to progress, find out how an apprenticeship can support you through this so you can stay with your employer and gain a higher level qualification.”
I've picked up so much from the course, ranging from the likes of VAT to Microsoft Excel - it's been brilliant. I live in Sunderland, so I am commuting for my studies as well as working full time as an accountant, but it's totally worth it.
I've just completed the level 3 course in AAT and have already secured my place for level 4 in June!
I'd highly recommend coming to Middlesbrough College, I've learnt so much which has already proven to help me within my career.
"I live in Leeds but noticed Middlesbrough College advertising the 18th Edition Update for just £180 - one of the cheapest I'd seen.
I found it really easy to get to the College campus - it's right next to the train station or just a short walk from the bus station.
The course has been brilliant. It's a great way to keep up-to-date as an electrician. My tutor is really helpful - he lets us crack on but is always willing to answer any questions we may have in the class.
I'd definitely recommend the course if you're looking to ensure your knowledge and skills remain current."
"The course has been great. It's well paced and the teaching has been fantastic. It has been great to stay up to date with all the latest best practice! It really can be the difference between life and death."
Parminder studied the AAT Accountancy Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4 courses at Middlesbrough College and is now working as a Finance Assistant at Teesside University.
Parminder said "The AAT courses at Middlesbrough College definitely helped me to secure my job role. The recruitment process was tough but the skills and knowledge I learnt at Middlesbrough College helped to set me apart from the competition.
The AAT courses have prepared me well for the world of work and have opened loads of doors for my future.
There are lots of opportunities that I can now progress on to but I plan to get an Accountancy degree and become a chartered accountant. My career ambition is to one day open my own accountancy firm.
My tutors were so supportive of me and we built such a strong relationship throughout the course.
I studied whilst working which was difficult but it was 100% worth it. It really is a fantastic route into a career in finance and I would recommend the AAT course to anybody interested in pursuing a career in accountancy."
“I joined Cleveland Police in 2007 and became a tutor for the enquiry desk, I enjoyed and felt I had a natural flair for teaching and quickly progressed in my role. In 2014 I became a Police Assessor and decided I wanted to go and get myself a nationally recognised qualification to support my experience and knowledge.
I came across the TAQA course at Middlesbrough College and enrolled for the Level 3. Lorraine my tutor was brilliant, she delivered one to one on-site training for me so meaning minimal disruption to my day to day job and the opportunity to apply my learnings to real-time work scenarios. After completing the course at Level 3 I enrolled onto the Quality Assurance Level 4, the knowledge I have learnt on the programmes has led me to create new guidance on assessments, work books and expectations during assessments from the learner, leader and the QA.
I am always applying the knowledge I have learnt, I attend the Police Front Counter Forum where I share the practices we use and products we have developed. It’s great to have the qualification to credit our thinking behind new practices and procedures. I wouldn’t have been able to do the course if it hadn’t been delivered in such a flexible way, not only did Lorraine teach me in my place of work she also responded to any email query I had within 24 hours, she worked around my schedule which makes it all that much easier. She also made the whole course enjoyable too!”
"I am now in full time work and can provide for my family, the employability programme at the college has really given me the motivation I needed to progress. I’d recommend the course to anyone looking to get into work, just work hard and don’t give up because the outcome is worth every minute!
The support from staff is fantastic, I couldn’t have done it without them!"
"It’s not easy to put into words but it feels awesome!
It’s a huge relief to be back in the working world. The course content was fantastic and the tutors were truly brilliant, if you want to get into work you should definitely consider this course!"
James Ross, Sage
‘I’ve been working with the Northern Skills Group now for over a year and have found that we are creating a great working relationship.
Firstly, we’re seeing some great benefits from taking on apprentices. Personally, I’m enjoying being a part of building an individual’s confidence and helping them develop and gain new skills. From a business perspective, it’s great to see our apprentices want to get involved, put their new skills into practice and support our customers.
We have a good balance in place between our apprentices. An apprentice is getting work based learning and education, coupled with enhancing their knowledge through the NECC Training delivering regular training sessions. Roll all of this up and add in that the apprentices are getting the exposure to put into practice what they have learnt, and their experience that they are getting is a great introduction to the working world.
Sage have already seen some great benefits from having an apprentice programme in place. We have seen a number of apprentices gain the relevant exposure and experience to be successful in their applications to join Sage on a permanent basis, and enjoying a successful start to their working careers.’
Andy Kane, Darlington Business Society
We’ve worked with Northrn Skills Group over the past 18 months, delivering ILM level 3 & 4 leadership & management programmes and look forward to this continuing as we move to offer level 5 and third level 3 programme in the management and leadership space.
Beyond the training, the support and approach offered from Northern Skills Group has been great. From understanding our organisational context (as organisation that had never had a formal management development programme previously) and appreciating the challenges presented in the logistics and dynamics of facilitating programmes in an 11 site SME (125 FTE) through to regular check-ins and progress updates with me, it feel like we have a partnership rather than one of “just” a vendor & client.
I would be happy to speak to any company looking at forming a relationship with Northern Skills Group”
Glenn Thompson, EXP
I would like to say a huge thank you to Dawn for helping me through my NVQ3, I got the job in Kuwait and I couldn't have done it without the help of my Assessor and the team at Middlesbrough College.
Fiona Webb, Broadacres Housing Association
Broadacres have worked with Middlesbrough to deliver ILM training to a group of middle managers within the organisation.
We felt that the ILM framework suited our needs and have found that Middlesbrough College offered a flexible approach that supported our learners even in challenging circumstances.
The delivery of the taught element has been excellent and provided useful knowledge and skills that our managers have been able to utilise in the workplace making a real difference to our business.
David Wilson, Quality Control Engineer, NG Bailey
'Upon arrival for my Initial Verification and Certification of Electrical Installations course, Dawn my tutor greeted me at reception and found me once I'd watched the onsite induction. It was obvious her course and industry knowledge is extensive. She answered all questions I had and backed it up with evidence from books, I think she knows what is on every page in the electrical regulations from memory! I cannot sing her praises enough.

‘Apprenticeships are an underpinning element of the businesses strategy and the value they can add to any business should not be under estimated. Northern Skills Group have proven to be a solid and reliable source of apprentices for my business. We have successfully partnered with the college now for over 3 years and have already seen a successful transition of apprentices into fully qualified employees. Due to this success, we have increased our apprentice programme by 25%, buoyed by the successes we have both attained in this partnership together’.
Katy Selby SHE Advisor, Cobham Aviation - RAF Shawsbury
The Training and Assessing course delivered by Trudi was engaging and the demands of the course were organised in a way which was clear and flexible to the needs of both the business and each learner.
The course enabled me to identify the areas for improvement within both my delivery/presentation style and the preparation of the materials. The techniques from the course can be applied in a variety of sectors and will enable me to use my creative skill developing and delivering my own training packages.
The course developed my confidence and changed my perception of training others and has allowed me to excel and enjoy this requirement of my job role.
Theanna De Sanchos, Training Officer – Elring Klinger
'We have an excellent, long standing relationship and as such, approach the Apprenticeship team on an annual basis for all our training and recruitment needs. By providing Northern Skills Group with a number of potential vacancies, our business advisor initially recommend suitable frameworks based on our business requirements. They then provide a comprehensive service which supports the business with advertising vacancies and pre-selecting potential candidates.
It is great to know that our business advisor is always at the end of the phone if any queries not only from ourselves but from potential applicant. Their advice and guidance is much appreciated and we would highly recommend them to other businesses thinking of taking on an apprentice.’
Steve Broomhall, Hunstman Polyurethanes
‘I believe that the STEM project will deliver what the industry in the surrounding area is lacking and training and development of apprentices. STEM will be able to supply industry with apprentices who will have realistic industrial experience so they can be of value to employers. They will have experience of how industry works, what is expected of them and how their actions can influence process operations. I believe that STEM is a brilliant idea and bringing young people closer to real industry can only benefit the surrounding industry in the future’
Wendy Pattison, Academy Business Director, Framwellgate School Durham
‘Both apprentices at Framwellgate School Durham are excellent individuals who have brought benefits to our workforce. They are hardworking, committed and able, and enjoy learning the ropes within our organisation. They fulfil critical roles of IT and administration respectively, and are able to undertake tasks which benefit their team members and the academy as a whole. The process of recruitment was straight forward, supported by the Northern Skills Group.
